40 years

It is 40 years since Atom was founded and originally, they made, quite literally, ‘All Types Of Models’, and all by hand!

The humble beginnings of the company tenaciously weathered several recessions by innovating and embracing the emerging technologies.

The company has since developed into a substantial and multi-faceted entity, offering a rounded and comprehensive service, operating in a broad cross section of creative disciplines.

In 1995, Atom acquired and incorporated Thorp Modelmakers, world renowned architectural model makers who were established in 1883. Thorp were moved out of central London to operate alongside Atom in Sunningdale to mutually enhance the resources and expertise.

Following a change in the Board of Directors in 2019 which resulted in a partial change in ownership, the company has experienced a remarkable transformation. The experienced team of CAD technicians, designers, engineers, sculptors, and the most talented finishers are now even more motivated to accept nothing less than perfection. The quality of the finished product has become something of an obsession.

Projects now span the broadest range of disciplines, fulfilling commissions for Architecture, TV and film, prototyping product and packaging design commissions while also working alongside internationally renowned artists.

This last year has seen an expansion of the company’s premises over two sites with the addition of a purpose-built studio, offering state of the art technologies and a significantly enhanced working environment.

Atom is now positioned on the most solid of foundations, well equipped to flourish for another 40 successful years, offering an enduring resource to the creative industry.
